Michael Balls

For most of his scientific career, Michael Balls has been at the forefront of research into discovering relevant and reliable alternatives to animal testing. His academic interests have coincided with the emergence of vitally important bodies, consultations and commissions. He lives in Norwich, where he remains professionally active as a supporter of a number of causes.

Martin Barraclough

Martin Barraclough learned to fly in Kenya in 1953 at the age of 17. After five years of bush-flying in southern Tanganyika, during which he flew the length of Africa, he re- turned to England and joined the Tiger Club at Redhill where he was one of their regular display and aer- obatic pilots in the 1960s. In 1970 he bought his first aeroplane and then, in the mid-70s, joined the emerging world of vintage aircraft.

Susan Burns

Susan is the daughter of Adolf Pollatschek, a World War II refugee who came to England in 1939. She has traced the origins of her Viennese family, and in 2022 returned to Vienna to find the names of her ancestors on the Holocaust Wall of Names Memorial.

David Cranston

David Cranston completed his medical training in Bristol and worked in Exeter and Bath before moving to Oxford for post-graduate doctoral research. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England and spent 30 years as Consultant Urological and Transplant Surgeon in Oxford. He is Emeritus Associate Professor of Surgery in the Nuffield Department of Surgical Science and Emeritus Fellow of Green Templeton College, Oxford.

Eva Evans MBE

Eva was part of the enforced migration of German Jews caused by the coming to power of the Nazi regime. Her background was not untypical of that exodus. Creating a new life for herself in Britain, she received an MBE from the late Queen and rcecntly delebrated her 90th birthday.

Air Vice-Marshal ‘Larry’ Lamb

Air Vice-Marshal ‘Larry’ Lamb had two distinguished careers, first as an RAF pilot and senior officer and also as an international rugby referee and sports administrator. He joined the RAF in the later years of the Second World War and became a flying instructor and examiner before converting to the Hastings transport aircraft and flying on the Berlin Airlift. He later flew Javelin night fighters before becoming the Deputy Commander Air in Borneo during Indonesian Confrontation. He managed his limited helicopter and transport aircraft resources skilfully and was appointed CBE.

Rudi Leavor BEM

Rudi was born in Germany 1926. AHe was at home when the Gestapo forced their way into his house and arrested his parents. He travelled to England on a German cruise liner and settled in Bradford, where he followed in his father’s footsteps and became a dentist. Rudi’s love of music stems from the teacher he had in Berlin and it has played an important role throughout his life.

Irma Lengkong Mikkonen

Irma Lengkong Mikkonen was born in Jakarta in 1967. She spent most of her childhood and early adult life in New York, USA. She received her Bachelor of Science degree from Boston University in 1989 and Master in Business Administration from Fordham University in 1991, both in Finance. She has worked in several financial institutions in New York, Singapore and Jakarta. She was also a lecturer in Accounting and Finance at the Indonesian Institute for Management Development (‘IPMI’) in Jakarta.

Neo Kalungu-Banda

Neo Kalungu-Banda is a Psychology student at the University of Leicester. He is a Zambian who was born in South Africa and grew up in the UK. He is passionate about football, writing, coaching and mentoring young people and listening to other people’s stories. He is currently exploring the role of faith in young people and using conversation as a way of connecting with people.

Marcel Ladenheim BEM

If they had not gone into hiding, they would have been arrested in 1942 and sent to Velodrome D’Hiver. The Nazis utilised this place to imprison Jews before they were sent to the nearby concentration camp Drancy, and subsequently to the Concentration Camp of Auschwitz Birkenau. Marcel studied at Manchester University and worked as a dentist until his retirement in 2002.

Sir Peter Ogden

Sir Peter Ogden is an English businessman who is one of the foudners of Computacenter, one of the UK’s largest computer businesses. Born and educated in Rochdale, he was educated in Durham, UK, and at the Harvard Business School, USA. His charity The Ogden Trust focuses on education.

Simon Over

Founder of Southbank Sinfonia in 2002, he has conducted concerts throughout the UK and Europe including St James's Palace; The Royal Opera House, Covent Garden; The Queeen Elizabeth Hall and the Royal Albert Hall. He has conducted on recordings with cellist Raphael Wallfish, tenor Andrew Kennedy, pianist Allessio Bax and soprano Ilona Domnich.

Mohammed Abdulla Pasha MBE

Mohammed Abdulla Pasha is an Indian Muslim. He graduated in Medicine in 1953 from Andhra Medical College, and has been in England since 1956. He retired from the National Health Service in 1992 where he worked as a Consultant Physician. In 2003 he was awarded MBE for Services to Health and Community Relations.

Professor Terence Ryan

Professor Terence Ryan is a Professor of Dermatology at Oxford University and has been Vice Warden of one of its colleges. He was at one time Chairman of the Faculty of Medicine and of its Board for Oxford University. He is also a Professor of Dermatology at Oxford Brookes University where he collaborates with the Nursing Profession.

Iris Simmons MBE

Iris Simmons moved to Esher in 1950 when her husband Roger started his architectural practice in the High Street. They gave decades of service to the local community, for which she received the MBE. She was Mayor of Elmbridge, a Councillor for 14 years, and was heavily involved in over 25 voluntary organisations including the Princess Alice Hospice.

Lord Singh of WImbledon

Indarjit Singh, Baron Singh of Wimbledon CBE is a British journalist and broadcaster, a prominent British Indian active in Sikh and interfaith activities, and a member of the House of Lords. He is editor of the Sikh Messenger and a regular presenter on Thought for the Day (BBC Radio 4) and Pause for Thought (BBC Radio 2).

David Spencer

David Spencer served in the army in an infantry line band in the 1960s and 70s. During this period he struggled to come to terms with his sexuality at a time of huge legal and social discrimination of gay men and women. He and his partner retired first to Luxemburg and then to Warwickshire.

Philomena Srawley

Philomena qualified as a nurse in the NHS, and spent the majority of her career working in the health service - as a Nurse, a Sister and then an NHS Manager.

Sir David Steel

Sir David Steel is an international commercial arbitrator. He acts as party appointed member of tribunals, chairman and sole arbitrator in international commercial disputes of a wide-ranging subject matter, including sale of goods, banking, insurance and reinsurance, joint ventures, carriage of goods, oil and gas and shipbuilding. He has been appointed in over 240 references leading to over 70 awards.

Nicola Webb

Nicola was born in Bedford, England and studied English and Humanities at university in Nottingham, followed by a career spent marketing law firms. Her fascination with Victorian servant life started in the 1970s, with the British TV programme Upstairs Downstairs. It continued at university, focusing on Victorian writers and social history, and culminated in her writing about Patrick and Mary Anne Chaworth­Musters.

MAR Teleghany

MAR Taleghany came from a family of lawyers and men of letters. He followed the family tradition and received two degrees in law from the University of Tehran. He continued with his advance studies at the University of London where he received another two degrees. He taught law for several years at his alma mater. Subsequently he moved to England where he practiced as a consultant lawyer.

Ian Vaughan-Arbuckle

From early years in India and Hong Kong, to service in Germany and the Falkland Islands (among many others), Ian’s career in the army has taken him around the world. A keen sportsman and accomplished traveller, Ian narrates his life story with passion and enthusiasm through some momentous periods in twentieth century history.

Vic Vicary

Vic has served over 35 years in the military, earning a meritorious medal for his discreet, exemplary service. During this time, he has been exposed to all the extremes of the planet, testing his own mental resilience and mental health. He is now sharing his experiences to help others.

Mark Wood

Mark Wood is an established explorer who operates within the cold extremes of the planet. He has seen the curvature of the earth’s surface above the clouds on Mount Everest; he has been stalked by a polar bear through storms and freezing temperatures as he crossed the floating sea ice towards the North Pole; and Mark has spent 50 days completely alone as he walked to the South Pole.
