The Discoveries of a Dermatologist

The achievement as a scientist in this small book is about my debatable contributions to science. I do not claim to be a great scientist, but my Oxford DM and title of Oxford Professor indicate some achievement. I have honorary scientific degrees and life-time achievement awards in: Dermatology UK and the International League of Dermatologic Societies; the International Society of Dermatology; in international wound healing in the USA, China and Pavia; and lymphology in Toronto. This demonstrates interest from four careers: dermatology, microvascular patho-physiology, the lymphatic system and public health. My NHS role as a Consultant Dermatologist was combined with research, and during retirement I took up the promotion of Sir William Osler, ‘the Father of Modern Medicine’, working as curator of his home and preaching, as he did, the importance of science blended with the humanities. With old age humanities gradually took over and I began to recommend friendship.
Nevertheless, there has always been more than pretence that some of my ideas and certainly some of my practice has scientific value.
So writes Terence Ryan as he describes his scientific career and the contributions he has made to medicine during his remarkable career. Throughout this fascinating book written as he enters his tenth decade, Ryan shows no signs of losing his passion for international health care.
