The ‘King of Patagonia’ was a 28-year-old ex-naval officer from Nottinghamshire. Not a lot of people know that.
It’s not strictly an official title but Commander George Chaworth Musters acquired the nickname after an extraordinary adventure by horseback across the wild expanse of Patagonia over 150 years ago.
Virtually unknown in the UK, George Chaworth Musters is revered today in Patagonia, largely because he befriended the indigenous Tehuelche people who lived there, at a time when most Europeans kept a wary distance. George’s subsequent book At Home with the Patagonians, published in 1871, recounted how he faced down attempted murder, drowning, a marriage proposal and a wild bull attack during his amazing travels. Looking for Uncle George tells how his great, great, great nephew Justin Milward retraced George’s groundbreaking footsteps across the unknown Patagonian void.
