Dementia is a universal malady of humankind, with a relentless march across the four corners of the globe, giving rise to ten million new cases every year. It is the second leading cause of death in the world, behind heart disease. In people aged over 75, the rate of dementia is doubled every ten years.
Women, with greater life expectancy than men seem doomed to suffer even more. Sadly, the world has not yet found a pharmaceutical cure for this cruellest of diseases. Whilst diagnosis of dementia is easier, prognosis or care is poor and prolonged, resulting in the blocking of hospital beds, straining the creaking health care systems, and putting other deserving patients at risk.
This small book puts a spotlight on this growing crisis, highlighting these disturbing trends. In doing so, it makes the case for greater funding for research to give hope for the world’s population.
In doing so, we celebrate the wonderful poems written by Dr Fatima Aziz, herself a dementia sufferer, a beloved sister, wife, mother, grandmother and aunt.
All proceeds of this book will go to dementia research.
